Bengaluru weather: With orange alert in place, will India and New Zealand get some cricket on Day 1?

New Zealand’s cricket team has returned to India for the second time this year as part of their World Test Championship campaign. Last month, the team was in Greater Noida for the one-off Test vs Afghanistan.
The match, however, was abandoned without any play due to rain and poor drainage system, which did not allow the ground to be ready for the game. This resulted in New Zealand losing an opportunity to gain crucial points in the World Test Championship.
Recently, the Indian team also faced issues with rain in their match against Bangladesh in Kanpur. In the first three days, only 35 overs were bowled because of a wet outfield, which was a result of an inadequate drainage system.

Despite these challenges, the Indian team managed to resume play and set rapid scoring records, achieving 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 runs quickly. They went on to win the match in the remaining two days.
New Zealand face India in the first Test match in Bengaluru, where the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for the first two days of the Test match. The toss on the first day has already experienced a delay due to weather conditions.

However, unlike the recent matches in Greater Noida and Kanpur, Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium is equipped with a world-class drainage system. This advanced technology can prepare the ground swiftly for play after rain.
The Chinnaswamy Stadium features the ‘SubAir’ system, which has two crucial functions: water drainage and aeration.

  • By facilitating proper air circulation within the soil, it promotes the health and vitality of the grass.
  • The system offers the flexibility to alternate between drainage and aeration modes, depending on the specific requirements at any given time.
  • During periods of rainfall, the SubAir system promptly activates its drainage mode, efficiently removing excess water from the surface. This rapid drainage capability ensures that the grass remains in optimal condition, preventing waterlogging and associated issues that could compromise the quality of the turf.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange alert’ for Bengaluru and its neighboring districts in south-interior Karnataka, forecasting very heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. Light to moderate showers are expected to continue until the weekend.
Bengaluru is likely to see a maximum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius over the next five days.
After the first Test in Bengaluru, the second Test will be held in Pune, and the third Test will conclude at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
