After the success of Avatar 2, James Cameron wants to continue forward with Avatar 3: “We’ve created a franchise…”

James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water has become a major hit all around the world, grossing $1 billion at the box office in just 14 days. The very expensive follow-up to the 2009 original will now produce a profit, according to filmmaker James Cameron, clearing the way for Avatar 3 and the two subsequent sequels that are now in the works.

At the international box office, the first Avatar brought in close to $3 billion. It continues to be the all-time best-grossing movie. Following its release last month, the sequel went on to earn more than $1.5 billion globally, surpassing Tom Cruise’s Top: Gun Maverick’s take to become the highest-grossing film of 2022.

On this week’s episode of “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” James Cameron discussed the future of the Avatar franchise and said: “It looks like I can’t get out of this and I’m going to have to do these other sequels. With the momentum that the film has now, we’ll easily pass our break even in the next few days. I already know what I’ll be doing in the following six to seven years. We’ll be fine, that’s the key. We’ll talk about the future of Avatar 3 with the top Disney executives, I’m sure, in the near future.

It is already finished; we have already recorded and photographed the entire movie, therefore we are in a lengthy post-production phase to complete the CG effects. After that, both Avatar 4 and 5 are written. Even some of the number “4” is in the container. At this stage, a franchise has started. We’ve started a story that might now span several movies.
