Tár, directed by Todd Field, won Best Film at the newly announced National Society of Film Critics, capping a rare hat-trick of victories this awards season that already included Best Film wins from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and New York Film Critics Circle. In addition, performers Ke Huy Quan and Cate Blanchett won the best lead actress and supporting actor awards from all three organisations, respectively.
These critics’ circle awards have a significant impact in determining the frontrunners in some of the major categories prior to the Academy Awards. With wins for Best Film from the National Society of Film Critics, Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and New York Film Critics Circle, Todd Field’s Tár continued to dominate the critics’ circle honours. Todd Field also received a Best Screenplay award for it, while Cate Blanchett, the lead actress, received the Lead Actress Award and Nina Hoss finished as the runner-up in the Supporting Actress category.
