Former India opener Shikhar Dhawan has credited MS Dhoni for playing a crucial role in shaping his early international career. Dhawan said it was Dhoni’s trust and backing during his early days that gave him the confidence to succeed at the highest level. Speaking during a charity event titled Beyond the Boundaries in London, Dhawan reflected on the support he received from the former India captain. “I feel Dhoni bhai supported me a lot and truly backed me. At the start of my career, his belief in me made a big difference. When a leader shows that kind of faith, it really helps you grow and go a long way,” Dhawan told IANS. While Dhawan acknowledged the support he later received from Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as captains, he emphasised that Dhoni’s mentorship during the initial stages of his journey stood out. “Even later on, Virat or Rohit backed me as well when they became captains. But Dhoni bhai’s support in the initial phase was something special,” he added. The left-handed batter also appreciated the role of coaches and support staff over the years, stating their efforts off the field were equally important.
