NEW DELHI: The upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy has sparked discussions about India’s bowling attack, especially with veteran pacer Mohammed Shami‘s absence. Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden shared his insights on potential replacements, focusing on Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep.
Hayden acknowledged Prasidh Krishna’s strong showing in a recent unofficial Test against Australia A. However, he believes Akash Deep is better suited to fill Shami’s shoes in the Indian team.

“Prasidh Krishna did very well in the unofficial Test match, but for me, Akash Deep is the closest replacement for Shami’s type of role,” he said during a select media interaction organized by Channel 7.
Hayden, who has extensive experience playing against India, highlighted Akash Deep’s suitability for Australian pitches. He specifically mentioned Perth and Adelaide, known for favoring fast bowlers.

“I think he [Akash Deep] will go very well in Perth and Adelaide,” he noted.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins on Friday at Perth’s Optus Stadium, pitting the top two teams in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) standings against each other.
