England secured victory in the Twenty20 International series against the West Indies with two matches remaining. The win came after a tense, rain-delayed match at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia. This is England’s first white-ball series win in the Caribbean since 2019.
Rain delayed the start of the match by 50 minutes. The West Indies struggled early in their innings, falling to 37 for the loss of five wickets.
A half-century from West Indies captain Rovman Powell helped the team recover. Powell scored 51, while Romario Shepherd contributed 28.
The West Indies ultimately set a target of 146 runs for England to win. Saqib Mahmood was England’s most effective bowler, taking three wickets for 17 runs.
England’s chase got off to a shaky start, with opener Phil Salt dismissed for four runs. Captain Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell were also dismissed cheaply.
Sam Curran and Liam Livingstone steadied the innings for England, with Curran scoring 41 and Livingstone 39. England ultimately reached the target with just four balls to spare.
The victory is a positive sign for England after disappointing performances in the 2023 ODI World Cup and this year’s T20 World Cup.
The win also continues a trend in the series of the team winning the coin toss going on to win the match. This has been the case in all three One Day Internationals and the first two Twenty20 Internationals.
Two more T20 matches remain to be played in St Lucia this weekend, with England looking to complete a series sweep.
