1st Test, Day 1 Highlights: Ton-up R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja lift India to 339/6 against Bangladesh | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Ravichandran Ashwin‘s sixth Test century, combined with Ravindra Jadeja‘s resilient knock, propelled India to a commanding 339 for six at stumps on day one of the first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Bangladesh’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss yielded early dividends.
Pacer Hasan Mahmud, making his third Test appearance, ripped through India’s top order with a fiery spell of 6-3. Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0), and Virat Kohli (6) fell victim to Mahmud’s early onslaught, leaving India precariously placed at 29 for three.
KL Rahul (16) and Rishabh Pant (39) attempted to rebuild the innings, but their partnership was cut short by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mahmud respectively, leaving India reeling at 144 for six.

However, the experienced duo of Ashwin and Jadeja orchestrated a remarkable turnaround.
They displayed exemplary resilience and counter-attacking prowess, forging an unbroken 195-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
Ashwin, showcasing his trademark elegance and timing, reached his century with a single off Shakib Al Hasan. His innings, studded with 12 boundaries and a six, was a testament to his batting prowess and ability to perform under pressure.

Jadeja, playing the perfect foil, anchored the innings with a composed 86 not out.
His innings was characterized by calculated aggression, punctuated by nine boundaries and a six. He effectively rotated the strike and provided unwavering support to Ashwin.
The pair’s dominance frustrated the Bangladesh bowlers, who struggled to contain the flow of runs. Mahmud finished as the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with figures of 4-58, while Miraz claimed one wicket.
India, initially on the back foot, ended the day in a position of strength, thanks to the exceptional partnership between Ashwin and Jadeja. The onus will be on the duo to further consolidate India’s position on day two.
