IPL: BCCI may allow franchises to retain uncapped players | Cricket News

MUMBAI: The much-awaited meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with the Indian Premier League (IPL) owners to discuss the retentions ahead of the mega auction will take place at the board’s headquarters in the Wankhede Stadium complex on Wednesday.
“A major time of the meeting is likely to be consumed in discussing retentions, which are likely to be not more than five or six in number, more time (five years from three) in the frequency of the mega auction, an increase in purse and performance-based increments for a player,” a source tracking development told TOI.This paper had reported that the auction purse could be increased to Rs 130-140 crore from Rs 90 crore.
An interesting thing that is likely to hap pen this time is that franchises could be allowed to retain at least a couple of uncapped players under a separate slot.
“Every franchise could be allowed to retain, say, two-three uncapped players from their squad in the 2024 IPL season under an additional slot. The franchises are likely to push for it. Almost all the franchises have developed certain uncapped players which they don’t want to lose since they have invested in them over the last two-three years,” a source informed.
The list of uncapped players who the franchises will like to hold on is a long one. The Mumbai Indians have developed Nehal Wadhera, Naman Dhir and Akash Madhwal; Kolkata Knight Riders have Vaibhav Arora, Ramandeep Singh and Suyash Sharma; Punjab Kings have Harpreet Brar, Ashutosh Sharma, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh; Chennai Super Kings have Mukesh Chaudhary, Simarjeet Singh and Sameer Rizvi; Sunrisers Hyderabad have Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abdul Samad; Royal Challengers Bangalore have Yash Dayal, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Anuj Rawat and Mahipal Lomror and the Lucknow Super Giants will be keen to retain the pace duo of Mayank Yadav and Mohsin Khan.
Before the 2022 mega auction, the eight franchises were allowed to retain up to four players, with a maximum of three Indians, two overseas players and two uncapped Indians.
There were no Right-to-Match cards allowed as two news teams were added at that time, but one RTM card could be there this time.
Impact Player rule likely to stay
As this paper had reported, the Impact Player rule is likely to be continued in IPL 2025, despite its most obvious drawback of discouraging the allrounders.
“Look, the rule may not be great from the point of view of developing the allrounders but it’s ensuring big scores, which the telecaster wants. Also, more players are being tried out and a few players are getting some much-needed rest during the matches too. The main thing is, India won the T20 World Cup in June, after two years of this rule being tried out in the IPL. So, it may continue for another year,” a source said.
