Women’s IPL: Everything You Need to Know About the Auction and Bidding

The excitement around the first Women’s IPL (WIPL) has reached a fever pitch. The BCCI is scheduled to announce the five franchise owners, along with the towns they have bid for, on January 25 after concluding an amazing media rights agreement that will net it roughly USD 116.7 million over a five-year period. Here is a ready reckoner from ESPNcricinfo that provides details on the auction procedure, a bidders’ list, and the auction pot.

All ten of the men’s IPL franchises were among the 33 parties who initially expressed interest by obtaining the tender document. Only 17 organisations, including seven male IPL teams (Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Royal Challengers Bangalore), submitted technical bids on Monday.

Adani Group, Capri Global, Haldiram’s Group, Torrent Pharma, Apollo Pipes, Amrit Leela Enterprises, Shriram Group, and Slingshot 369 Ventures Private Limited are among the other bidders.

The BCCI has not established a base pricing. The bids will be delivered by bidders in a sealed envelope. The winning bidders will own the team forever, just like the owners of the men’s IPL clubs, and bids will be open for a ten-year period. The BCCI has nominated ten cities for home bases, and bidders will compete for one of those places.

Ahmedabad (112,560), Kolkata (65,000), Chennai (50,000), Bengaluru (42,000), Delhi (55,000), Dharamsala (20,900), Guwahati (38,650), Indore (26,900), Lucknow (48,800), and Mumbai, which has three grounds—the Wankhede, DY Patil, and Brabourne Stadiums—are the cities listed (stadium capacity is indicated in brackets).

Although bidders have the ability to compete for more than one franchise or city, the BCCI will only grant them the city for which they submitted the highest bid. A re-bid will be held if the top two offers for a single venue are tied.

Additionally, the BCCI will have the “discretion to pick the order” if the highest offers for two sites from two distinct bidders are identical. If a bidder submits the highest offer for more than one city, the bidder may select the location of their choice.
