Who has the best chance of reaching the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup semifinals?

ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2020 points table: India to meet England again in semi-finals

A few teams are already vying for a place in the semi-finals as the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023’s Super Six stage heats up.
Each Super Six group’s top two teams advance to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, as is customary, the winning team from each group plays the losing team from the other group.

As a result, the Group 1 champion will play the Group 2 runner-up, and the Group 1 runners-up will play the Group 2 table-topper.

According to the rules of the event, if teams finish with an identical number of points in the Super Six groups, the teams moving on to the semi-finals will be determined by “the largest number of victories in its Super Six Group.”

This implies that Group stage points would also be taken into consideration for determining total Super Six stage points, and the points table currently reflects this.

Not all points, it should be noted, were carried over to the Super Six. In each First Round group, the match featuring the fourth-place finisher did not carry over any points to the Super Six round.

Equal points in the Super Six stage imply that semi-final positions are determined in the following priority order, per the tournament’s playing conditions:

16.10.6 Super 6
In the event of teams finishing on equal points in their Group, the right to progress to the semi-finals will be decided in the following order of priority:

a) The team with the greatest number of wins in its Super 6 Group will be placed in the higher position.
b) If there are teams with equal points and equal wins in its Super 6 Group, then in such case the team with the higher net run rate in its Super 6 Group will be placed in the higher position (refer to clause 16.10.9 below for the calculation of net run rate).
c) If two or more teams are still equal, they will be ordered according to the head-to-head match played between them (points then net run rate in those matches).
d) If the above does not resolve the Super 6 Group ordering, or if all matches within a Super 6 Group produce no results, then the teams will be ordered as per their original Super 12s Group seedings.

Group 1
how each one got into the Super Six

Australia and South Africa both had two points when the Super Six stage got underway, while India and Bangladesh each had four points. Since then, South Africa defeated Bangladesh while India defeated Sri Lanka and lost to Australia, giving the group a new appearance. Australia crushed the UAE and came dangerously close to reaching the semifinals.

With six points apiece, India and Australia are presently at the top of the standings. At the Super Six stage, where each team plays two other teams, both have finished their set of games.

With one more game remaining, South Africa and Bangladesh have a chance to rise to six points. However, they will need to dramatically improve their net run rate to defeat Australia and India in the battle for the semifinals.

In the last round of Group 1 matches, South Africa plays Sri Lanka while Bangladesh faces off against UAE.

With four teams in Group 1 tied on six points if Bangladesh and South Africa win their individual games, the passage into the semifinals will rely on net run rate.

At the conclusion of Day 10 of the competition, India and Australia both had respectable net run rates and were in a solid position to go to the semifinals.

Group 2
how each one got into the Super Six

In the Super Six phase, England and New Zealand carried over four points from the group stage while Pakistan and the West Indies each had two.

moment in time

In the opening round of the Super Six matches, England inflicted a severe defeat on Ireland to significantly raise their net run rate, while New Zealand did the same against Rwanda.

With only one game left, West Indies’ loss to Rwanda on Sunday eliminated them from contention for a semi-final position.

Pakistan managed to defeat Ireland on Monday to advance to four points, but their chances of qualifying depend on the outcome of the match.

Pakistan’s final game is against New Zealand, and if they win, they can advance to six points. However, it might not be enough. To increase the net run rate and compete with England and New Zealand, who both have six points, they would need a huge victory.

In the penultimate match of the Super Six stage, England plays West Indies, and regardless of how Pakistan or New Zealand do, a win there would guarantee England’s qualification to the semifinals. However, a defeat would factor in net run rate, even if England is still quite certain to go to the semifinals.
