Steven Spielberg, the actor Drew Barrymore’s godfather and a director, paired her up with fellow child actor Corey Feldman.
When Corey appeared on “The Drew Barrymore Show” this week, the 47-year-old actress and her old friend were reunited after 25 years apart. Corey recounted receiving a call from Spielberg’s office requesting him to see Drew. The young girl from “E.T.” wants to see you because she has a crush on you, according to a call from Steven (Spielberg’s) office, he added. Oh sure, I did, the biggest, Drew said in response. However, everyone did!
Jaid Barrymore, the mother of Drew Barrymore, then made plans for the kids to see a movie together. “Of course, none of us drove because I was still residing at my grandparents’ house and you were residing with your mother,” said Corey. It was also really cute.
He recalled the Encino theatre where he had taken you to the movies: “I know exactly which movie theatre it was.” “You extended your tiny hand for me to clasp as we crossed the street. We crossed the street as I held your hand. I can’t recall which movie we saw. But I do recall that.
The two became close and started dating as adolescents; the young couple even made their red carpet debut at the Academy Awards when Corey was 17 and Drew was 14. They were both 14 at the time.
Regarding their glamorous outing, Drew Barrymore said, “I remember you were going, so I was fortunate enough to be your date. And I just tossed on an off-the-rack cotton dress by Betsey Johnson. It probably cost $65 but I don’t know for sure.
“I recall arriving there and saw individuals wearing such high-end clothing. And I can still recall turning around and realising how underdressed I was. I’m dressed in a Betsey Johnson cotton dress. A whoops!
We were such the nice little, adorable little thing for the three months we lasted or whatever,” Corey recalled of their relationship. But it was cute,” Drew continued, adding, “We were so optimistic; we were such wonderful friends. We were in a relationship where others advised us to date our friends. We represented that in physical form. You were extremely considerate, and you served as a refuge for me.
The two acknowledged to heavy drinking during their adolescence, with Corey admitting that Drew was able to “get her life together” a few years earlier than he was.
“You got sober first; you got your act together first,” he said in conclusion. I needed a couple more years than you did.
