Kim Kardashian, a reality TV celebrity, spent nearly $200,000 for a necklace that belonged to Princess Diana.
According to ‘People,’ the 42-year-old reality personality allegedly paid $197,453 (160,000) for the diamond-encrusted amethyst Attallah cross pendant worn by the late monarch, who passed away in a traffic accident in 1997 at the age of 36.
Head of Jewellery at Sotheby’s London, Kristian Spofforth, said in a statement: “This is a striking piece of jewellery by its size, colour, and style which cannot fail to make a bright statement, whether it be of religion or fashion—or even both. We are happy that this piece has been given a fresh lease on life by a different internationally renowned figure.
The publication continued by claiming that Kim Kardashian is “honoured to hold a superb piece of jewellery held by the late princess,” who wore the necklace at a charity banquet in London in 1987 while donning a purple Victorian velvet gown created by Catherine Walker.
The cross-shaped pendant, thought to be a one-off private commission by Garrard for one of their regular clients, is a bold and colourful piece set with square-cut amethysts and accented by circular-cut diamonds, according to a press release describing the item, which hasn’t been seen in public since before Princess Diana’s passing.
The cross is roughly 136 x 95mm in size and weighs about 5.25 carats of diamonds in total. The cross, it is believed, was only ever worn by the princess, and until now, it has never been seen in public.
