According to reports, Cristiano Ronaldo gave his former agent Jorge Mendes an ultimatum to get him a move to either Bayern Munich or Chelsea in the summer. The two broke up before Ronaldo moved to Al-Nassr because Mendes was unable to get him a transfer to Chelsea or Bayern Munich.
According to a story in the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Ronaldo gave Mendes an ultimatum last summer as the star begged for a transfer away from United after the team was denied Champions League eligibility. We’re through unless you bring me Bayern or Chelsea, Ronaldo told Mendes. You’re crazy, his manager reportedly responded, failing to sign him to either team.
El Mundo added that there were disagreements between the two parties after Cristiano left Real Madrid. The athlete desired to become a free agent so that his salary might match that of Leo Messi, but Mendes persuaded him to remain with the Spanish team. “Real Madrid will protect you if you stick with us. It’ll get worse if you go,” allegedly said Mendes to the man.
During the transfer window, Mendes had courted Ronaldo to a number of teams, with Bayern Munich and Chelsea being the most prominently connected with a bid for the superstar, in part because of his commercial appeal. When Thomas Tuchel was manager of Chelsea at the time, Todd Boehly, the club’s new owner, was eager to bring the seasoned forward to Stamford Bridge.
Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn also acknowledged that the club had privately considered the possibility of signing Ronaldo before saying that he did not “fit our concept.”
According to reports, neither club was interested in signing Ronaldo.
After Ronaldo left United, Mendes allegedly tried to get him to join Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.
El Mundo stated: “What shattered was much more: a paternal, family, and even business relationship. Mendes never asked his players to sign a simple contract. Ronaldo’s mother, Dona Dolores, frequently displayed her love for Jorge Mendes, and the agent is one of the player’s children’s godparents.
Regufe, Ronaldo’s personal manager and close friend, ultimately arranged for the astonishing £175 million per year transfer to Al-Nassr.
