Pirates Of The Caribbean 6: Disney Has Decided Its Future

Fans have been eagerly waiting for an update on Pirates Of The Caribbean 6. If one recalls, the initial plan was to create a spin-off with a female in lead. Margot Robbie was roped in and everything seemed to have been working well. Cut to, Johnny Depp winning the defamation trial and fans began demanding his return and Disney was under immense pressure. Amidst it all, has the upcoming film been scrapped for once and all? Scroll below for all the details.

It was just last month that Margot broke her silence and confirmed that the POTC spin-off is currently on the back burner. She mentioned how the idea was to come up with a female-led project but it seems Disney isn’t enthusiastic about it anymore. Many even speculated that Warner Bros may be contacting Johnny and offering him a comeback and that is why the spin-off had been shelved.

Variety reported in summer 2020 that Disney was in early development on Robbie’s “Pirates” movie as well as a second reboot written by franchise veteran Ted Elliott and “Chernobyl” creator Craig Mazin. Bruckheimer, who produced all five “Pirates” movies starring Johnny Depp, was always attached to both projects. It was confirmed in June 2020 that Robbie would be the star of a new “Pirates of Caribbean” movie at Disney written by her “Birds of Prey” screenwriter Christina Hodson.

Bruckheimer told The Sunday Times in May that both projects were still in development at the time, adding, “Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two ‘Pirates’ scripts — one with her, one without. [Will Johnny Depp be back?] Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.”

Robbie was Vanity Fair’s cover star last month and told the publication, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool. But I guess they don’t want to do it.”

There are no official plot details for Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean, though the star has promised “lots of girl power” and expressed confidence in Hodson’s ability to bring a “key female element to that world.” The most important female element in that equation is obviously Robbie, who based on her recent comments, is under the impression that Disney is no longer interested in the female-led reboot. With Bruckheimer reaffirming interest on behalf of the studio, it will be interesting to see if Robbie is still game, or perhaps the female-led Pirates of the Caribbean reboot has lost its lead star.

An in-demand actor like Robbie certainly isn’t going to sit around waiting forever. As her Pirates of the Caribbean movie has been relegated to the back burner, the Academy Award nominee has remained busy with David O. Russell’s Amsterdam and Damien Chazelle’s Babylon in 2022, and Greta Gerwig’s buzzy Barbie movie and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City slated for next year. There are many who would love to see the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise added to Robbie’s list of upcoming projects, though right now, it’s unclear when that will officially happen.

When Disney shared plans for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 that didn’t include Johnny Depp, fans were outraged. Disney faced backlash for months prior to this announcement and, it seems, this is what led to the Robbie project being canned. Well, with Disney still not able to draw Depp back to the company, it seems they may be willing to just move on from the franchise entirely rather than attempt to produce something that will only receive backlash from its viewers.

The five-movie franchise can be streamed on Disney+ and, of course, is based on the beloved attraction that can be ridden at both Disneyland Resort in Anaheim and Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando.
